LOCHABER'S
CAPE BRETON SQUARE SETS
Throw
on your dancing shoes and come to a Square set dance put on by Christy
Hodder and her band Lochaber. She may even bring some of her
fiddle students along for you to do jigs and reel sets to.
This is an event that may be the first of it's kind in your town and
everyone will be pretty excited about it! Christy Hodder
from the Halifax Celtic group "Lochaber" accompanied by her band
will be ripping out Cape Breton jigs and reels on fiddle and other
instruments for everyone to square set to. The first 45 minutes of
the dance will be a quick intro "how to" lesson. Square
set dancing is so simple and fun that you can just jump up on the dance
floor and in a short time figure out what you are doing just by
following the flow of the people dancing around you. Anyone can do it!
Cape Breton Square set dances go on all over Cape Breton drawing crowds
to their small community halls. Many people fall in love with these
Community dances and even move there just so they can go often.
Looking into a Cape Breton square set hall you will see a crowd of
heads, 8 to 80 years old, bopping up and down to the wonderful energy of
jigs and reels on the fiddle.
This could be a yearly event that all will start anticipating the next
one the week after the last one. Some of Hodders students like
Iain Beaton and Natasha Hope-Simpson practice hard to take a turn at
fiddling for a Lochaber crowd and hope to be invited as a guest fiddler.
That is what it is all about. Keeping tradition by putting on and
supporting events like this to pass the treasure of our culture on to
our children/communities.
A
Ceilidh for intermission is a must part way through the night to sample
some highland dance numbers from Lochaber's dancer and a highland pipe
solo or Gaelic ballad. Members of your group or community can also
be involved in the Ceilidh.
